- Give Thanks
We are almost at the end of November, I can't believe it! This month, at the end of this week, in my home country in the USA, we celebrate Thanksgiving. According to legend, it was a day when, centuries ago, the English pilgrims and the Native Americans enjoyed a meal together. Exactly why is a mystery. Some say that the pilgrims were hunting and the sound of gunfire made the Native Americans curious. They then went to the English who invited them to eat. Others say that they were invited to extend thanks for their help. In any case, it was a day to thank God for the blessing of a good harvest, and to thank the Native Americans because without them, the pilgrims would not have survived the first year. Without their teachings they would not have known how to plant beans, corn and squash together. A system called "The Three Sisters" because when they are planted together, they nourish each other like a family. Beans capture nitrogen from the air and fix it in the soil - fertilizing corn and squash. Squash and beans use the tall stalks of corn as support to wind their tendrils around. Finally, the large leaves of squash cover the ground so that other unwanted plants do not grow. The pilgrims learned this and much more from the native people of that part of the continent. Without their knowledge it is certain that they would not have survived their first year and especially the fierce winter of the Northeast. In viticulture, we also plant other plants alongside the vine for its benefit and that of the surrounding environment, especially legumes, but we'll talk about that another day.
Today, Thanksgiving is a day to spend with loved ones and to give thanks for all that you have. It's a day to enjoy together and to reflect. And of course it is a day to drink good wine in good company. There are several types of wine that go well with turkey, but the delicacy of its skin and white meat, and the fat of the dark meat requires a medium-bodied red wine. A red with fine tannins, or a white wine with lots of minerality and good acidity. Me?! I'll be drinking both of these wines this week. I hope you''ll join me!
2022 Los Bermejos Malvasía - This beauty comes from the volcanic soils of Lanzarote. With notes of citrus flowers, and stone fruit like peach and apricot, it goes perfectly with turnip and sweet potato purees.
2022 Frontón de Oro, Traditional Red - One of my favorites! This wine and its elegant tannins with notes of violet, rosemary and red fruits is the perfect pairing for turkey with the famous cranberry sauce that's on every table on that day.
Here in Mexico, obviously not many people celebrate this date, but in our home, yes. That's why I want to thank all of you. To my customers - thanks to you Sarah's Wines has been a success in the first six months and I have some new things coming in the coming year; to my new friends in my new home - thank you for welcoming me; and to the country itself for opening its doors and sharing the beauty of its culture with me. Thank you!
On the other hand, check out the new blog here. It has nothing to do with Thanksgiving, or American agriculture. It talks about Cork and its importance for wine. Read it here
En Vino Veritas!
